32 bit or 64 bit – How to find out

Windows is available in both a 32-bit and a 64-bit version. If you want to install new software, you are often faced with the question of whether you have a 32-bit or 64-bit operating system. You can quickly find out which of these two CPU architectures is on your computer:

  • First, open the “Control Panel” using the Windows button (formerly “Start”). In the category view, select the “System” option.
  • Here, in the “System” section, you will find all the information about your Windows operating system. Below that, under “System type”, you will also find information about whether you have the 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows on your computer.



Windows 11 – 32-bit or 64-bit

Of course, a lot changes with each new version of Windows. You can also find some of the system information in a different place. If you want to find out whether you have a 32-bit or 64-bit operating system in Windows 11, proceed as follows:

  • First, click on the Windows button again. Then go to “Settings”. This icon will be the first one you see by default.
  • In the “Settings” select the second option “System” in the category view. In the “System” section scroll all the way down.
  • After you have clicked on the last option “Info”, you will see all information about your Windows operating system. Under “System type” you can see which version of Windows is installed on the computer.
