Windows: How to find out the version

There are various ways to find out your Windows version. As is often the case, you can choose between very simple and somewhat more complex.

Insider tip: Find out your Windows version with a keyboard shortcut

Why choose the complicated route when it can be so easy? To find out the current Windows version number, simply use a keyboard shortcut. In fact, we even have two keyboard shortcuts for you. With this little trick, you can check your Windows version in a flash:

  1. (Windows-Taste) + (Pause): This will take you directly to the basic information about your computer. In addition to the other information, you will also find the current version of Windows that is on your computer.
  2. (Windows-Taste) + (R) opens the Run dialog. You type in “winver”. After pressing the return key, your current Windows version is displayed.
  3. Tipp: If you frequently need system-relevant information, there is a very simple way to access it quickly. In this case, it is a good idea to save the commands from the Control Panel directly as an icon in the start menu.

Windows version – How to get the info

In addition to the keyboard shortcuts already described, Microsoft offers you other ways to access system information, such as the current Windows version:

  • First, click on the Windows Start button. You will usually find the blue Windows icon at the bottom, in the left corner of the screen.
  • In the start menu, first click on “Settings”. Then scroll all the way down to the last item “About”. If you are using Windows 11, first go to “System” and then scroll all the way down to “About” in the right half of the page.
  • After clicking on the “About” option, you will not only find all the information about your Windows version. “About” also lists various details about your system.
  • You can also reach your goal by following the following path: Control Panel > System and Security > System. Under the menu item “System” you will not only find your current Windows version, but also some other interesting information about your computer.
