Activate the integrated laptop camera - here's how

Almost every laptop today has an integrated camera that you can activate in just a few steps. You can also use it to take photos.

Activate the integrated laptop camera: How to do it in Windows 8

With Windows 8, 10 and 11 you can access your webcam via the integrated “Camera” app. Since Microsoft developed the program itself, it is already pre-installed on many devices.

  1. Open the Start menu and search for the “Camera” app. Click on it to open the app.
  2. If you can't find the app, you'll need to install it from the Microsoft Store.
  3. You will then see the image from your webcam. You can use the shutter button on the right to take photos in the app or switch to video recording.
  4. Good to know: If you receive a message saying that no camera was found, it may be switched off. Some laptop manufacturers provide a keyboard shortcut for this to protect your privacy. It's best to check the manual for your laptop.

Windows 7: Use laptop camera via additional software

If you have Windows 7 installed, you will need third-party software. One simple solution is ManyCam.

  1. Download and install the tool. It is best to use the Chip download section to get a safe installation file.
  2. After installation, you can use ManyCam immediately. Start the software and your webcam image will appear.
  3. You can use the filters to further adjust the image or add text, for example. If you have a green screen, you can even replace the background of the image with ManyCam.

Use webcam for video calls

If you want to use your webcam for video calls, you usually don't need any additional programs besides the conference software.

  1. Launch your chat software like Zoom or Skype and join a call. Your camera will automatically be set up and ready to use.
  2. Before the conference begins, you will often see a preview image and can also make various settings.
