Nintendo 3DS or 2DS: A comparison

Nintendo 3DS and 2DS are two portable consoles that are very different in comparison. There are six different models in total.

3DS and 2DS in comparison: These are the 3DS models

The two devices are visually different from each other: The Nintendo 3DS (or 3DS XL) can be opened and closed like a notebook. This is particularly practical if you want to take the console with you.

  • The 3DS has a 3.8-inch upper screen and a 3.3-inch lower screen. The 3DS XL has a 4.8-inch upper screen and a 4.2-inch lower screen.
  • The hardware comes with an 804 quad-core and 204MHz graphics processor. The 3DS XL even has 268 MHz.
  • The Nintendo 3DS has a storage capacity of 128 MB. With 256 MB, the 3DS XL can double this.
  • The special feature of the 3DS is the interchangeable target panels. The other models in the 3DS and 2DS series do not have this option.
  • The 3DS and 3DS XL are also equipped with ZL and ZR buttons and a C-stick.
  • Both models of the 3DS have stereo speakers.
  • The battery life is about three to four hours with the 3D function switched on.



The models of the Nintendo 2DS

The 2DS model has also had an XL version since 2017. The games from the 2DS and 3DS are compatible. Technically, the 2DS differs mainly in its visual appearance.

  • Unlike the 3DS, the 2DS does not offer the option to set the screen to 3D.
  • The 2DS comes with a top screen size of 3.5 inches. The touchscreen has a size of 3 inches. The XL version has a screen size of 4.8 inches and a touchscreen size of 4.1. The 2DS cannot be folded like the 3DS.
  • The 2DS also has a slightly lower screen resolution. At 400×240, it is slightly behind the 3DS at 800×240.
  • The 2DS XL is no different from the 3DS and 3DS XL in terms of processor and hardware. Only the 2DS has to make do with a 268 MHz dual core.
  • The 2DS does not yet have amiibo support or a C-stick or ZL/ZR buttons. However, you will find these in the 2DS XL model.
  • The 2DS and the 2DS XL have mono speakers installed.
  • The battery life is about five hours.
