Reset HP printer: Easy guide

If you want to reset your HP printer to factory settings, you can do so either on the device or using the HP Smart app.

Resetting HP printers: How to do it via the control panel

Resetting an HP printer using the control panel only takes a few steps. Use the touchscreen or navigation buttons to navigate the control panel.

  1. Open your printer's dashboard by swiping down once on the screen. This step is not necessary for all HP printers.
  2. Depending on the model, click either on “Menu” (rectangle with three horizontal lines) or on “Setup” (gear symbol).
  3. Go to “Printer Maintenance” and then click “Restore”. On some devices, you may need to click “Tools” instead.
  4. Next, go to “Restore factory settings” and click “Continue” or “Yes” to confirm.
  5. Your printer will now display “Restoring printer to factory settings” and restart after approximately 20 seconds.

How to reset your printer using the HP Smart app

If you use the HP Smart app, you can also reset your printer to factory settings here:

  1. Go to the app's home screen and select your printer icon.
  2. In the settings, go to “Advanced Settings” and open the EWS (advanced web server).
  3. On the EWS home page, click on “System” or “Settings” and log in with your printer PIN and user name. Depending on the model, you will find the login details on the printer flap or inside the cartridges. For HP LaserJet printers, enter “admin” as the password.
  4. Go to “Restore Default Settings” and select the “Factory Defaults” or “Restore Factory Settings” option and then click “Yes”. If you have an HP LaserJet printer, go to “Service”, “Restore Default Settings” and then click “OK”.
  5. Wait for the printer to restart. It should take about 20 seconds for it to restart.
