Windows Character Map: Where to find it?

In the Windows character map you will find the entire character set of the various fonts. You can copy the characters and paste them into your document.

Windows 11- how to find the character map

It is not always possible to insert all the characters you need using the keyboard, and that is where the Windows character table comes into play. The Windows character table is an extremely useful tool, particularly for special characters or symbols, and often guarantees a quick solution.

  • In Windows 11, first press the “Windows key” or click on the start icon. Then simply enter the letter “z” in the search field. Windows will then offer you the “Character Map” option. You click on it and the Character Map tool will appear.
  • A second way to access the character map is via the execution bar. This option is a bit more complicated, but works in almost all versions of Windows.
  • First, press and hold the Windows key while simultaneously pressing the letter “R”. A search field will then appear and you can enter “charmap”. As soon as you press the Enter key, the character map will appear.
  • In the character table, first select the appropriate font from the drop-down menu. Once you have found the character you want, click on it and then click “Select”. Finally, click “Copy”.
  • In your document, right-click to open the context menu and use the “Insert” option to insert the selected character. Alternatively, press the “Ctrl” and “V” keys.

Windows 8 and Windows 10 – how to access the character map

The procedure for finding the Windows Character Map in Windows 8 or Windows 10 is hardly different from the one already described above:

  • You press the “Windows key” and enter “z” in the search bar. Then click on the “Character Map” option that appears.
  • Alternatively, press the two keys “Windows” and “R” to open the run bar. Type “charmap” and press the “Enter” key.
