Ford: Update navigation system - here's how it works

You should update your Ford navigation system regularly. This is the only way to get the latest maps for your car navigation system. While map updates for older models still require a fee, newer models also receive a refresh without a fee.

Ford: Navi update partly free

Ford has been using the “SYNC” system since 2014. This is the operating system in the integrated radio. This system also includes the navigation system. Older vehicles developed before 2014 use other systems, usually the “MFD” or “MCA” system.

  • If you use a newer model with “SYNC”, both software and map updates are available directly from Ford completely free of charge. You can find corresponding instructions in the next paragraph.
  • For older models, you can buy the updates online. You will then usually receive a CD or SD card with new map material and corresponding instructions. One of these providers is NavigationsSoftwareUpdate.de. In some cases you will also receive a download file, which you then install via a USB stick. The procedure is then the same as described in the next paragraph for newer models.
  • If you are not sure which system your Ford uses, try the following SYNC system guide first. If your car is shown as not compatible, you should find it on the website above.
  • Alternatively, you can also obtain updates for all systems from your Ford dealer. However, you usually pay an installation fee for both the free and paid updates.

Instructions: Update Ford navigation system

Since 2014, all new models have used Ford's SYNC system. Updates for your navigation system have been free since then.

  1. First, open the following Ford website and enter the 17-digit chassis number here. You can find the number on the door frame of the vehicle door or on the registration certificate.
  2. It will then be checked whether a system or map update is available for your Ford. If yes, you can start the download.
  3. You now need a USB stick with at least 32 GB of storage space. The USB stick must be completely empty. Delete all data from the USB stick or format the USB stick.
  4. Now unzip the downloaded ZIP file by double-clicking and drag the contents of the ZIP file onto the USB stick. The ZIP file usually contains a folder and two files.
  5. Start the engine of your Ford, insert the USB stick into the radio and wait a moment. The update starts automatically and takes up to 30 minutes. During the installation you will be asked several times to turn the ignition off and on again.
