There is a simple answer to the question of why storks clatter – the clattering noises are used for communication. They are basically the stork language.
Why Storks Rattle: The Language of Storks
Storks clatter to communicate with each other. The rattling has various functions:
- On the one hand, the majestic birds clatter to greet each other. For example, a stork clatters when its partner returns to the nest.
- The clattering is also part of the courtship behavior of storks to initiate mating. By clattering, the male stork attracts females who are ready to mate.
- The rattling sound can also serve to scare away enemies that approach the nest.
- Young storks begin to clatter as soon as they are in the nest. Since this of course attracts potential enemies, the parents also clatter their beaks.
