Alien: Romulus – plot and ending of the horror shocker explained

Alien Romulus: The end of the story makes a sequel possible. It also ties in with the first Alien film. Whether the monster dies remains uncertain.

Alien Romulus: Nothing ends well at the end of the story

Alien Romulus takes place between the first film from 1979 (Alien) and Alien: The Return from 1986. The events of the film are linked to earlier Alien films. This is especially true due to the return of the synthetic being Rook. It is reminiscent of Ash from the first Alien film and also pursues the interests of the Weyland-Yutani Corporation.

  • The film is set in the year 2142. The film describes the life of the young orphan Rain Carradine on Jackson's Star, a mining colony owned by the powerful Weyland-Yutani corporation. Colonists toil side by side with androids in a dystopian world.
  • Andy, a rather damaged android, is programmed to look after Rain's well-being. She sees him as her little brother and hopes to have a better life with him on Yvarga. The sun is said to be visible on the celestial body.
  • After years of working for Weyland-Yutani, the protagonist longs for her contract with her employer to end – but to no avail. The company increases the number of work units to be completed. This means that Rain has more years to spend on the desolate planet.
  • At this very moment, Rain joins the gang of her ex-boyfriend Tyler. He wants to break into the abandoned space station Romulus to steal fuel and cryogenic sleep chambers. He wants to escape to a better planet with his sister Kay, who becomes pregnant during the course of the film, and his cousin Bjorn.
  • Andy is supposed to open the door to the space station for the group, which also includes Bjorn's girlfriend Navarro, a pilot. The space station is about to collide with another planet. The group therefore has little time to maneuver through damp, narrow and dangerous corridors.
  • After entering the space station, Bjorn, Andy and Tyler narrowly escape a horde of facehuggers. When Rain and Navarro rush to their aid, the pilot dies in an alien attack. In addition, the android Rook, who was thought to be destroyed, awakens and explains the true purpose of the research station to the survivors.
  • In a dramatic showdown, most of the characters die. The alien also dies – or so it seems.

Alien Romulus – an ending with question marks

As in the first Alien film, the heroine has to face the monster alone. Even if she gets rid of it, it remains unclear to the viewer whether the hybrid is really dead. Questions that another part could answer.

  • At the end of Alien Romulus, the plot reaches a dramatic climax when the main character Rain and her companion Kay try to leave the space station.
  • Tyler sacrifices himself. He tries to save Rain and Kay from a Xenomorph and enable the others to escape.
  • Kay, who was previously attacked and seriously injured by a Xenomorph, injects herself with an experiment called Prometheus 5 to save her unborn child. This experiment is based on a type of black slime that was extracted from the genes of the Xenomorphs.
  • Developed by the Weyland-Yutani Corporation, Prometheus 5 is based on tissue samples from the alien. This is the key to why the creature is so resilient and adaptable.
  • Tragically, the drug results in the birth of a hybrid creature – a mixture of human and xenomorph. It kills Kay and seriously injures Andy.
  • Rain eventually manages to throw the monster out of the ship and into the planet's rings before entering stasis herself in the hope of reaching the planet Yvaga.

The young wild ones from Alien Romulus

In Alien: Romulus, the main characters Rain, Andy, Tyler and Kay each have different motivations that drive their actions in the film, leading to dramatic conflicts and decisions.

  • Rain is a former miner who has been marked by a difficult past. Her main motivation is survival, both for herself and for those she cares about. Having lost her family, she sees the group as a kind of surrogate family. Particularly important to her is her relationship with Andy, whom she considers her brother, even though he is an android.
  • Andy is an android who was reprogrammed by Rain's father to protect and help Rain. His motivation is strongly linked to Rain's well-being. However, his original programming was influenced by an encounter with the android Rook. As a result, he tries more and more often to fulfill the Weyland-Yutani Corporation's mission. Nevertheless, his concern for Rain remains central.
  • Tyler is Kay's brother and Rain's ex-boyfriend. His main motivation is protecting his sister Kay, especially since she is pregnant. He will do anything to keep Kay safe, even if it means sacrificing himself. Tyler's actions reflect a deep familial bond and a need to do the right thing for his family, even if it costs his life.
  • Kay is Tyler's pregnant sister and a central character in the plot. Her motivation revolves around the survival of her unborn child. Her desperation to save the child leads to drastic measures. She injects herself with the dangerous “Prometheus 5” serum. Kay is driven by the fear of losing her child. This protective instinct determines many of her decisions throughout the film.
