Android: Back up apps and data – here's how

The process Android.process.media has stopped - what to do?

Backing up your Android can be very useful. This way, you can back up your data in case any unwanted issues arise with your device.

Android: Backup using your Google account

It's particularly easy to back up using your Google account.

  • To do this, open the settings of your Android device.
  • Select “Google” to view your Google services.
  • Go to “All Services” and then to the “Backup and Restore” section. Click “Backup.” The storage space used in your Google account should already be displayed in the “Recommended” area, then click on this field. This will also take you to the backup.
  • When Google One Backup is enabled, a backup is automatically created when your device has been inactive for two hours, is charged, and connected to a Wi-Fi network. Alternatively, you can also load your data manually into the backup using the “Backup now” button.

Complete Android backup with root rights

There are also various apps that can provide support for a complete data backup on your Android smartphone. For example, the “Titanium Backup” app.

  1. First download the “Towelroot APK” onto your smartphone. This is the only way programs with root privileges work properly.
  2. In the next step, install “Titanium Backup”.
  3. In the batch actions you can create a complete data backup using the “Backup” sub-item. The best way to do this is to select the “Back up all user applications + system data” option.
  4. In the next menu you can exclude individual apps from the backup. After that, all you have to do is click on the green checkmark in the top right corner and the backup will begin.
  5. You can restore the backup later using the batch actions in the “Restore” sub-item. Please note, however, that there may be problems with the restore process if you use a different custom ROM than before: After flashing an Android smartphone, system apps from the old ROM may interfere with the new operating system. This can cause performance problems.

Android data backup without root rights

Normal smartphone users are also not denied backup: “My Backup Pro” works even without root rights.

  1. Download “My Backup Pro” to your device. When you start the app for the first time, you must enter your email address and password to back up your data online.
  2. Click on the “New Backup” button to create a new backup. First, choose whether you only want to back up applications including media content (photos, music, etc.) or all data.
  3. You can then determine the storage location: whether locally on the SD card or online using your email account is up to you.
  4. You can easily restore your data backups later in the “My Backups” sub-item.
