Backup and export Firefox passwords

You can back up your passwords stored in Firefox at any time to protect yourself from losing important access data.

Firefox: Securing passwords – these are the steps

While it used to be necessary to secure passwords saved in Firefox with an additional tool, this can now be done directly in the browser's password management without any such detours:

  1. In Firefox, click on the top right Menu Button. This shows three horizontally arranged lines.
  2. Choose the one Settings out of.
  3. Switch to the area Privacy & Security.
  4. In the “Passwords” section, press the button Saved passwords.
  5. Tipp: You can also enter the address about:logins to go directly to the page.
  6. Now click on the top right three points and choose Export passwords… out of.
  7. Confirm the message with Continue with export. By clicking the button Save export the passwords to the specified file on your hard drive.

Note that all your passwords are in the created file in a directly readable format are deposited. This allows unauthorized people to steal your passwords if they gain access to the file.

  • You should therefore definitely delete the file if you no longer need it. Ideally, you should use a program like Eraser for secure deletion.
  • If you want to keep the file as a backup, you should store it in a safe place, such as an encrypted data safe or a container file.
  • To recover your passwords from the file, navigate to the page in Firefox as described previously about:loginsclick on the three dots and select Import access data from file… out of. Now enter the path to your password file.
