Buying a Germany ticket for 1st class: Is that possible?

Buying a Germany ticket for 1st class: Is that possible?

If you would like to travel in 1st class on Deutsche Bahn, this is only possible to a limited extent with the Deutschlandticket. But as is often the case – no rule without exception.

Germany ticket for 1st class: This is what you should know

In general, the Germany ticket is not intended for travel in 1st class. However, there are two federal states that represent an exception. If you live there, you can easily combine first class travel with the Deutschlandticket. Everyone else will probably have to make do with 2nd class if they want to benefit from the low price of the Germany ticket.

  • It has now been decided that the price of the Germany ticket will definitely increase. From January 2025, the Germany ticket will no longer cost 49 euros, but 58 euros per month.
  • One of the two federal states where you don't have to miss out on the comfort of 1st class with the Deutschlandticket is North Rhine-Westphalia. The other federal state where you can travel in 1st class with the Deutschlandticket is Baden-Württemberg.
  • Tipp: In addition to the two additional tickets that are valid for the entire federal state, 1st class upgrades for the Germany ticket are also occasionally offered for various regions. If you are interested in an upgrade, please contact the responsible transport association.
  • Important: The additional tickets for 1st class are only valid for the respective federal state. As soon as the train crosses the “border” into another federal state, you must leave 1st class or buy an additional 1st class ticket unless a corresponding upgrade is available in the new federal state. Of course, the Germany ticket itself remains valid.

Germany ticket for 1st class: This is how much it costs

The upgrade of the Germany ticket from 2nd to 1st class has the illustrious name “NRWupgrade1.Klasse” in North Rhine-Westphalia. Just like the Germany ticket, you can also book the additional option as a subscription.

  • The additional option “NRWupgrade1.Klasse” currently costs you an additional 69 euros per month. In addition, there are the costs of 49 euros for the Germany ticket until 2025. This means that the Germany ticket for 1st class in North Rhine-Westphalia will cost you a total of 118 euros until the end of 2024 From 2025, 127 euros will be due, provided the price for the additional option “NRWupgrade1.Klasse” is not also increased.
  • In Baden-Württemberg, the additional ticket for the upgrade is actually quite inexpensive at 49 euros, so that the comfort version of the 1st class Germany ticket will only cost you 98 euros until the end of 2024. From January 2025 it will be 107 euros. Here too, it remains to be seen whether the additional ticket for 1st class will be more expensive.
