The so-called “Chroming Challenge” is a dangerous trend that is spread particularly by children and young people via social networks.
Chroming Challenge – a dangerous new trend
Through the Chroming Challenge Several children and young people have already died. The trend is to spread videos on social networks in which children and young people “sniff” toxic, potentially deadly substances and are thus put into a state of euphoria.
- The videos show children inhaling toxic fumes using items that are either available at home or that are freely available in stores, such as nail polish remover, varnish, glue, paint thinner or cleaners.
- Inhaling the vapors leads to a brief intoxication. The consequences can be serious, however, and in extreme cases even lead to death. Possible symptoms include confusion in the mind, a lower IQ, vomiting, problems with the cardiovascular system, cardiac arrest and brain damage.
- There is also the Chroming Challenge an addictive potential. The dangerous substances are easy to acquire and yet harmful. Young people post the videos to gain recognition and reach among their peers. This leads to copycat effects, which makes the trend all the more dangerous.
- This makes it all the more important that parents and schools educate and take preventive measures. Children must understand why such trends are so dangerous. They should learn that such behavior can lead to serious, permanent damage and health problems.
- It may also be necessary to regulate the use of this type of product used for chroming in order to protect children and young people.
