Connecting an external hard drive to a tablet - this is how it works

To expand the memory of your tablet, you can use an external hard drive. Most devices support the USB OTG standard.

Connect tablet to external hard drive on Android

In order to connect an external hard drive to your Android tablet, you need to make a few preparations. In addition to the connection between the tablet and the hard drive, you also need a power source for the hard drive.

  • The tablet requires a USB On-The-Go function and a USB OTG cable.
  • Normally, 3.5-inch hard drives have their own power connection. Since the power consumption of the hard drive is so high, you do not have the option of drawing power from the tablet.
  • Android practically only understands FAT formatting, which is primarily used for smaller storage media such as USB sticks. Android does not support the common hard drive format (NTFS).
  • Once your hard drive is formatted, you can now connect it to your Android tablet and use it.

Connect iPad to external hard drive

You can also connect an external hard drive to your iPad. The hard drive and iPad must be compatible with Thunderbolt.

  • You may need an adapter to connect the iPad and hard drive correctly.
  • As with Android tablets, the Apple device is not able to recognize NFTS formatting. Therefore, keep a FAT format in this case too.
  • Also use an external power source and a separate power supply for your hard drive.
