Corset: How the lacing works

Corset: How the lacing works

Correct lacing of the corset is crucial for comfort and fit. It allows more freedom of movement and accentuates the silhouette.

How to lace a corset

A corset has both aesthetic and practical functions. It creates a feminine shape and conceals small curves. Unlike a corset, the corset rarely has sturdy boning, but uses soft ribbons or cords, which usually makes the garment more comfortable and less restrictive. However, the lacing must be done correctly so that it fits correctly and comfortably. For the classic back lacing, proceed as follows:

  1. Put on the corset and close the front hooks or zipper, if available.
  2. Start by threading the corset ribbon or cords through the top eyelets on the back of the corset. The ends of the ribbon should be the same length.
  3. Thread the cords crosswise through the eyelets, similar to a shoe, working from top to bottom.
  4. When you have reached the middle of the corset, leave a loop on each side. These will be used later to tighten it. Then continue cross-lacing below the loops until you reach the lowest eyelets.
  5. Now comes the adjustment: Start at the top and tighten the cords evenly, working your way down to distribute the tension evenly.
  6. Pull the loops in the middle to tighten the corset. Make sure it fits evenly. The corset should not crease and should not be too tight so that your breathing or freedom of movement is not restricted. A feeling of moderate tightness is ideal.
  7. Once the corset is tight and comfortable, tie the ends of the cords in the middle into a bow or knot.

These different lacings are available

Lacing requires a little practice at first. Be patient and take your time. If you have a corset that needs to be laced tightly, you can have a second person help you. If you wear the corset for a longer period of time, take regular breaks to loosen the lacing and relax. Try out different lacings to find the model that is best for you.

  • Lacing with eyelets: The shape uses metal eyelets through which the cords are pulled.
  • Front lacing: Some corsets have decorative lacing on the front. They are usually combined with the classic functional back lacing.
  • Side lacing: Some designs use side lacing to create a special visual effect or provide additional adjustment options.
  • Lacing between spiral rods: In these models, the eyelets are located between two spiral rods, which give the corset more stability.
  • The choice of lacing depends on the design of the corset, its function (decorative or shaping) and the desired level of comfort. The corset is often worn as underwear or part of a lingerie set.
  • No matter which method you choose, do not lace the corset too quickly or too tightly so that your body is not overloaded. Check the fit regularly and pay attention to your physical well-being.
