PowerPoint itself does not yet contain a free AI tool. However, there are various online tools that you can use.

The beginning works the same for all of these applications: First, you enter the topic you want to create a presentation on. Then, in many cases, you can select a presentation template that you like.
In the next step, the generative AI starts working. It creates an outline for the topic you specified and researches information on each point. It then selects the most important points and puts them on the slides. It also looks for images and tries to find slide layouts that are as varied as possible.
Most providers give you a certain number of credits for free, which are used when generating content using artificial intelligence. If you need more credits, you have to pay.
The best-known providers with free credits include Decktopus and Simplified. Presentations.ai currently (as of April 2024) has a completely free version while it is in beta.
Tip: Before creating your content, make sure that export is possible and also free of charge if you want to send your presentation in a common format or use it offline.

Each of the tools presented works slightly differently. These are the most important functions:

Presentations.AI learns over time to implement your slide style and integrate it into the generated design suggestions. This makes it suitable for company presentations where a certain corporate identity must be observed. The app is compatible with PowerPoint.

Microsoft has built its own generative AI based on GPT-4 into PowerPoint.

Unlike the apps mentioned, Copilot is not included in the regular Office subscription and must be booked separately. However, you may have or be able to obtain a license for Copilot through your employer.
If the copilot is available to you, you will see a “Copilot” button in the top right of the function menu in PowerPoint. If you click on it, a chat window will open on the right side of your screen in which you can give the copilot instructions.
For example, ask Copilot to create a presentation on a specific topic: “Create a presentation on (topic)”
You can also ask questions about the content of your existing slides. Copilot analyzes your presentation and answers the questions.
