Developing Onix: How it works

Since the introduction of the second Pokémon generation, Onix has been able to evolve into Steelix. The item Metal Coat plays a central role in this.

Onix can only be developed with the help of an item

Even in the first editions of the video game series from Game Freak and Nintendo, some Pokémon could not be developed simply by reaching a certain level. For example, Eevee needed a Water, Thunder or Fire Stone to become Vaporeon, Jolteon or Flareon, and even the ghost Pokémon Haunter could only develop into the now iconic Gengar by trading with another trainer.

  • These options were not relevant for the Rock and Ground Pokémon Onix at the time, as it was a standalone game and not part of an evolutionary series. However, this changed with the release of the Silver and Gold Editions for the Game Boy Color in 1999.
  • With Steelix, number 208 in the national Pokédex, Onix now received a further evolution of the Steel type, which was also first seen in the Pokémon anime in 2001.
  • In order for the evolution of Onix to Steelos to take place, you as a trainer must first equip the Stone Snake with the item Metallmantel Simply give the Pokémon the item to wear.
  • In the second step, Onix and his item must now be used against another player’s Pokémon exchanged Once the process is complete, development begins and the trading partner now owns a Steelix.
  • If you want to add this to your own Pokédex or team, we recommend trading it back directly. Alternatively, both players can simply swap a Metal-Clad Onix with each other.
  • This combination of item and trading process works in almost all Pokémon games that feature the evolution series.
  • Exceptions to this are “Pokémon Legends: Arceus” for the Nintendo Switch and the mobile game “Pokémon Go”.
  • In the Arceus game, you can simply apply the metal coat directly.
  • In Pokémon Go, however, you can press the “Evolve” button on your Onix as soon as you have a metal coat and 50 Onix candies. In this case, both the item and the candies are used for the evolution process.
