E-Netz or D-Netz: Which is better and what are the differences?

E-Netz or D-Netz: Which is better and what are the differences?

Whether the E-network or the D-network is better is also a bit of a question of faith. You can find out what the differences are between the two mobile networks in this practical tip.

The differences between mobile networks

  • The older of the two digital radio networks is the D-network, which has been operated by Deutsche Telekom as the D1 network since 1991. Vodafone then came onto the market with the D2 network in 1992.
  • The E-network, also divided into E1 and E2 networks, followed shortly afterwards. E-Plus has operated the E1 network since 1994 and Viag Interkom has operated the E2 network since 1997.
  • The main difference between the two mobile networks is the frequency range used. The D network uses the 900 MHz frequency range, whereas the E network operates in the 1800 MHz frequency range.
  • Therefore, the range of the D-network radio masts is significantly greater than that of the E-network. This is often particularly noticeable in rural areas.
  • However, the radio mast capacity is better with the E-network, as more users can access a radio mast at the same time. This is particularly noticeable in urban areas.
  • Another difference between the E and D networks is the energy consumption of your smartphone. The E network is much more economical here, because your smartphone consumes a maximum of one watt, while consumption in the D network can easily be two watts.
  • Ultimately, however, your location is the deciding factor, so you should check in advance what network coverage and network quality prevails in your area for the respective mobile network.
