Excel: Convert time into hours - this is how it works

In order to convert the time into hours or calculate the hours in Excel, you have to use a trick. To do this, format the cells as time.

Excel: Convert time to hours

If you enter a time in a cell in Excel, Excel will automatically recognize it and format the cell accordingly. By right-clicking on the cell, you can use the “Format Cell” command to adjust the display to your liking. You can calculate with the times and also convert them into hours:

  • For example, to convert a time that is in cell A1 to hours, enter the following formula: “=A1*24”. The result is the number of hours that passed from midnight, i.e. 0:00 a.m., to the specified time.
  • For example, you can calculate the difference between two times in hours. To specify how many hours there are between a time in cell A1 and a time in cell A2, enter the formula “=(A2-A1)*24”.
  • For example, the working hours for each day can be easily calculated. If necessary, you can enter a break time in cell C1 that should not be included. The formula is then: “=(A2-A1-C1)*24”
