Films about conspiracy: These 5 are must-sees

There are many conspiracy films out there. The top five are those with deeper themes, complex characters and suspense.

Film tip 1: Films about conspiracies: “JFK – Crime Scene Dallas”

In the 1991 US film drama, Kevin Costner plays district attorney Jim Garrison, who tries to uncover the background to the assassination of US President John F. Kennedy in the 1960s.

  • Garrison believes that the Warren Commission's lone-wolf theory investigating the assassination contains inconsistencies, so he reopens the case a few years after the assassination.
  • Bit by bit, he pieces together individual clues in the hope of getting a clear picture of the background to the assassination. But the deeper he gets into the investigation, the more inconsistencies and new questions he encounters.
  • His intensive research leads to conflicts in his private and professional life. Not only does Garrison have marital problems and problems with his team, but he also faces opposition from the press.
  • Various interest groups and individuals are examined who could have had a motive for the assassination. Garrison concludes that the suspected murderer of President Lee Harvey Oswald could not have been a lone perpetrator and that the assassination was part of a conspiracy.
  • The film by director Oliver Stone is known for its intensive examination of the various theories surrounding Kennedy's assassination. It encourages reflection on the power structures behind the scenes of a “state within a state” (deep state).

Movie tip 2: “Fahrenheit 11/9”

The investigative documentary by US producer Michael Moore from 2004 examines the background to the terrorist attack of September 11, 2001. The documentary is provocative and entertaining.

  • Osama bin Laden is considered the mastermind behind the terrorist attack of September 11, 2001, in which two planes flew into the north and south towers of the World Trade Center in New York and a third crashed into the Pentagon. Immediately afterwards, a war against the Taliban regime in Afghanistan began with “Operation Enduring Freedom”.
  • In the film, Moore investigates, among other things, the business connections of the presidential family of then US President George W. Bush, which also extend into the Arab world to the family of Osama bin Laden.
  • To this day, there is speculation as to whether the two towers were demolished in a controlled manner and to what extent the US government at the time might have played a role in this.

Filmtipp 3: “The Da Vinci Code – Sakrileg”

In 2006, director Ron Howard made a film based on Dan Brown's successful book “The Da Vinci Code”. Well-known actors in the conspiracy thriller include Tom Hanks, Audrey Tautou, Jean Reno and Ian McKellen.

  • Robert Langdon, played by Tom Hanks, is a professor of symbology at Harvard University. In the middle of the night, he is called to help solve a mysterious murder in the Louvre in Paris. The victim leaves behind a series of coded clues.
  • In the course of his investigation, he comes across the secret brotherhood Prieuré de Sion, to which Leonardo da Vinci, Victor Hugo and Sir Isaac Newton, among others, are said to have belonged. Langdon repeatedly comes across encrypted clues in Leonardo da Vinci's works.
  • He and his comrade Sophie Neveu, the cryptologist and granddaughter of the murdered man, discover a secret regarding the Holy Grail that could shake the entire Christian faith.
  • The film also addresses the theory that Mary Magdalene may have been the wife of Jesus Christ and that the couple may have had children whose descendants may still be alive today.
  • “The Da Vinci Code” combines the tension of a thriller with historical and religious theories. It raises the question of how much of what has been handed down in Christian history might have been manipulated and how much is still hidden.
