Forgotten 49-euro ticket, battery empty, lost cell phone – what to do?

Forgotten 49-euro ticket, battery empty, lost cell phone – what to do?

Anyone who has forgotten their mobile phone with the Germany ticket (initially a 49-euro ticket, soon a 58-euro ticket) at home must first pay a fine.

Forgotten 49-euro ticket/58-euro ticket – these are the consequences

When you get your ticket checked, you realize with a shock that your cell phone with the Germany ticket is at home, the battery is empty, or you have even lost your cell phone. This is annoying because you have to pay the fine first. However, since the 49-euro ticket, which will become a 58-euro ticket from 2025, is a personal ticket – issued in your name – you can at least get most of the money back.

  • Anyone who has forgotten their Germany Ticket at home or cannot present the ticket because their mobile phone is not working must first pay the increased transport fee (EBE) of 60 euros for “fare evasion”.
  • However, with the personal subscription ticket you have the option of presenting it later to the inspecting transport company. Depending on the means of transport, you can do this online using the contact form or on site at the counter. You will then get your money back minus a processing fee. With DB, for example, this costs 7 euros.
  • There is no uniform regulation throughout Germany as to how high the processing fee charged by transport companies is. This can therefore vary regionally and can therefore be cheaper or more than 7 euros.
  • You should present your Germany ticket to the relevant transport company as soon as possible. Sometimes a refund is only possible within a certain period of time. This can sometimes be as short as a week. You will usually find the deadline for presenting the ticket on the notice you receive at the inspection.
  • If you find your cell phone with the Deutschlandticket in your travel bag during the journey, the ticket inspector can cancel the fare dodging. In this case, depending on the transport conditions, you may not have to pay a processing fee.
  • If you have lost your mobile phone, you can re-upload the personal ticket to your new smartphone via the Deutschland Ticket app (for Android and iOS), as it is personal.
  • However, if you have used the wrong means of transport (eg IC, ICE, EC or ECE), there is no excuse. You will then have to pay the fine for fare evasion, even if you can later show the Germany Ticket. This is only valid on local and regional public transport buses and trains.
