Identify insects: The “Map of Life” app will help you with this
The first app we're introducing to you is called “Map of Life” and is a database for insects and other animals.
- With this database you can identify up to 30,000 animal species. These are not only insects, but also reptiles, mammals and birds. The app also allows trees to be recognized.
- The app can determine a location and then use a map to show you which animal species are native to that area. You can also simply select a location and the species native there will be displayed.
- The app is available free of charge for Android and iOS. However, it does not offer photo recognition of the animals and is rather simple in design.
Picture Insect Insect ID: App for Android and Apple
The second app is called “Picture Insect – Insect ID”. This Apple and Android app also offers a variety of options for dealing with insects and identifying them.
- The app has a database with many insects and can compare your finds with the database within seconds using automatic image recognition. You will automatically receive a suggestion as to what type it might be.
- In addition to a wealth of information about insect species, there is the option to get help from other users. You can ask questions about the insects and have others answer them.
NABU insect summer: Identify insects via web app
The third app is called NABU Insect Summer and was developed in cooperation with the Nature Conservation Association (NABU). This app is the successor to the NABU Insect World app and is only available as a web app.
- With the app you can identify insects, view insect portraits, report insects and view your observations. The recognition takes place via a photo that you take with your smartphone and then upload.
- You can use the app to help the Nature Conservation Association and report insects, which will then be recognized in a scientific counting campaign. However, it is necessary that your first and last name is included.
- The app is only available as a web app. This means that it is not a standalone program, but only works via the NABU website.
