Junk email filter in Outlook - how it works

The Junk Email Filter in Outlook automatically sorts spam into the Junk Email folder. Learn how it works and how to configure it.

Junk email filter – how it works

The junk email filter cannot completely remove your annoying spam emails, but it moves them to a separate folder so that they do not flood your mailbox. Since these messages can, in the worst case, contain viruses, attachments are usually blocked automatically.

  • The filter is enabled by default in Outlook. It is automatically set to “Low” but can be changed.
  • If the security level is set to “high”, Outlook may misjudge the emails. Emails that are not spam may end up in the spam folder.
  • Therefore, you should regularly check the emails in the junk email folder. If an email ends up in this folder by mistake, you can simply drag and drop it back into your inbox.

Configure junk email filter in Outlook

You configure the filter in the settings. These are the ways in the different Outlook versions:

  • Outlook 2010, 2013, 2016, 2019: Open the “Home” tab at the top. In the “Delete” group, select “Junk E-mail” and then click on “Junk E-mail Options”.
  • Outlook 2007 and 2003: Click on “Tools” in the menu at the top and then select “Options”. You will now see the “Junk E-Mail” button at the top.
