Mario Kart 8: Fire Hopping - how it works

In Mario Kart 8, the so-called fire hopping is the cause of heated discussions. But you can also accelerate in other ways.

Using Fire Hopping in Mario Kart 8

In Super Mario Kart 8, you can get a speed boost by collecting coins, mushrooms or drifting. You can extend this boost by fire hopping.

  • Immediately after receiving the boost, simply jump the kart into the air several times. The speed boost is only used when the kart is on the ground.
  • This extends the thrust. This is especially worthwhile in time trial mode.
  • In the meantime, however, the intensity of fire hopping has been somewhat reduced by a patch.

This is also how you build speed

Unfortunately, fire hopping no longer works in the deluxe version. However, there are other options you can use to speed things up efficiently.

  • Press the R button before you enter the corner. This will cause you to drift and build up more speed. The additional acceleration will occur especially if you keep this up for a while.
  • If the sparks are purple, you are driving in the highest gear. This is a great way to cover short distances.
  • If you have turned off the motion controller or are playing with a Pro Controller, also press the R button. This will temporarily make you faster when landing after the stunt.
  • You can also use stunting to accelerate. To do this, shake your controller vigorously when you cross a ramp.
