If network discovery cannot be turned on, this may indicate an outdated driver or necessary services that are not activated.

Network discovery cannot be turned on – what to do?

If you open the Network and Sharing Center on your PC, it may happen that network discovery cannot be activated. What you can do here:

  • First, make sure that you have the latest driver for your network card installed. To check this, you can start Windows Update or go to the manufacturer's website.
  • There may also be a problem with the connection you have chosen. If you are using a LAN connection, try connecting to a Wi-Fi connection and vice versa.
  • In order to enable network discovery, various services must be started. Go to “Control Panel” > “Administrative Tools” > “Services”.
  • In the list, look for “DNS Client”, “Functional Discovery Resource Publishing”, “SSDP Discovery” and “UPnP Device Host”. These should be marked as “Running”. If they are not, you will need to right-click on the services and start each one by clicking “Start”.
  • In some cases, special characters or umlauts in the network name cause this problem. Therefore, change the network name in the router menu so that there are no umlauts or special characters.
  • But the firewall can also block network detection: Some firewalls block communication between the router and the PC. Try turning these off.
  • Now try to enable network discovery again in the Network and Sharing Center.
