If your iPad remains silent and makes no sound when there are notifications or in apps, there could be several reasons for this.
No sound to be heard: iPad remains silent
If you want to play a song or watch a movie and your iPad has no sound, there are several possible causes for the problem, all of which can be easily resolved:
- Volume: On the right side of the iPad you will find two buttons that merge into one another. You may have accidentally switched your iPad to “silent” – so simply increase the volume again using the toggle switch.
- Mute: Above the button you will find a switch that you can slide up and down. If the switch is orange, the mute function is usually activated.
- Settings: Open the “Settings” app and select the menu item “Sounds”. Here you will see the option “Ringtones and notification tones”. If you slide the slider all the way to the right, the device will play sounds again.
- Control Center: You may have also adjusted the volume of your iPad via the Control Center. There is also a mute button in the icon bar on the far right.
- Flight mode or Airplay or Bluetooth: In the Control Center you can also check whether Airplay or Bluetooth are activated and whether your iPad is playing music on other playback devices, for example. Disable these functions individually or switch to “airplane mode”. This will disconnect all active connections to other devices. Music or sounds can no longer be forwarded to external devices.
If nothing helps: Restart or reset to factory settings
If the previous steps did not help, you can try restarting or resetting the iPad to factory settings:
- Restart: Press and hold the power button on the top of the device and turn it off and then on again.
- Reset: If no sound is heard even after a restart, the error may lie deeper in the system. Reset the device to the factory settings – either via soft reset or hard reset.
