Toll information Europe: Brief summary

The toll fee is not set across Europe, but varies from country to country. It also depends on the type of vehicle and the number of kilometers driven in the respective country.

  • Italy: There are around 80 toll motorways in Italy. The toll is based on the vehicle category and the number of kilometres driven. Driving on motorways with many bridges and tunnels is also charged extra. The average toll price for a small car is around 0.07 euros per kilometer.
  • Spain: Except for urban motorways, tolls must be paid on every motorway in Spain. Here, too, the toll is calculated based on the type of vehicle and the kilometers driven. If you are driving a car or camper van, you will pay around 0.10 euros per kilometer.
  • Austria: If you drive through Austria, you have to pay tolls on every motorway and expressway. A special toll is charged for some motorways. You pay the toll as a flat rate for a specific period of time and can then drive throughout Austria. A vignette for ten days costs 8.50 euros, for two months 24.80 euros and for a whole year you pay 82.70 euros by car. This vignette must be visibly attached to your vehicle and can be removed again after leaving the country.
  • France: In France, most motorways and expressways are also subject to tolls. If you are travelling by car, you pay around 0.07 euros to 0.16 euros per kilometer, and you also need an environmental sticker. This costs 4.80 euros and must be purchased online in advance.
