PS5 and PS5 Pro: An overview of the differences between the consoles

The PS5 Pro will be an upgrade of the PS5 and will have some differences to the normal Playstation 5 console. We'll tell you how the consoles differ. You can see our chip test for the PS5 in the video.

Differences between Playstation 5 and PS5 Pro

The Playstation 5 Pro will be released on November 7, 2024 for €799. Compared to the PS5, Sony has made some major changes to the hardware. The Japanese company is focusing on three factors in particular for the PlayStation 5 Pro: AI upscaling, improved ray tracing and a more powerful GPU. These should ensure that the frame rate in quality mode is a stable 60 FPS. Here are the most important differences at a glance:

  • While the PlayStation 5 has a CPU clock speed of up to 3.5 GHz, the PS5 Pro has a CPU clock speed of up to 3.85 GHz.
  • The GPU clock speed has also increased: the PS5 has a clock speed of up to 2.23 GHz and the PS5 Pro has a clock speed of up to 2.35 GHz.
  • This is ultimately reflected in the computing power. While the PlayStation 5 has 10.3 teraflops, the PS5 Pro has a whopping 18.1 teraflops.
  • The storage capacity has also been significantly increased: the regular PlayStation 5 has a custom PCIe SSD with 825 GB of storage. The PS5 Pro, on the other hand, comes with a whopping 2 terabytes.
  • The Playstation 5 Pro could therefore be optimally used as an optimized console for the PSVR 2.
  • Of course, the design of the PS5 has also been adapted for the new console, albeit only slightly. What is particularly noticeable is that the PS5 Pro is only available in the digital version without a drive. If you cannot do without a Blu-Ray drive, you will have to buy a separate device that will ultimately be connected to the PS5 Pro, similar to the PS5 Slim.

Hardware upgrade for PS5 Pro: What does this mean for old games?

Not only new games can benefit from the improved hardware of the PS5 Pro. Old games should also run better and/or look better on the new console. Sony calls this a “PS5 Pro Game Boost”.

  • This so-called “Game Boost” is to be integrated into the games via a PS5 Pro patch.
  • Specifically, Sony names the following titles, among others, that will definitely receive such a patch: Alan Wake 2, Dragon's Dogma 2, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Hogwarts Legacy, Horizon: Forbidden West & The Last of Us Part II Remastered.
  • Over time, however, many more titles will certainly be added so that gamers can benefit from the PlayStation 5 Pro's better hardware. Something similar also happened with PlayStation 4 titles on the PlayStation 5.
