Reading PDFs on the Kindle - here's how

Reading PDF documents on the Kindle is not easy because you cannot adjust the font size. But there are ways to help.

Read PDF on Kindle

On a Kindle e-reader, you can not only read e-books, but also PDF documents, whether from your PC or from the Internet. In order for your e-book reader to be able to handle the PDF format, you must first convert it into a native Kindle format. You have two different options for this:

  • Convert PDF via email: If you send the PDF to your Kindle email address, the device will convert the file itself immediately using a little trick. You can find the address in your Amazon account under “My Kindle”, for example. It is usually “[email protected]”.
  • The trick is: enter the term “convert” in the subject line of the email. The Kindle will then automatically convert the file into a format that is common for it.
  • Format Kindle compatible with Calibre: An alternative to converting via email is a small but useful tool called Calibre. Calibre is a converter, reader and file manager for eBooks in one. You can download the tool directly from CHIP.de.

Transfer PDF file to your Kindle: Other options

After you have successfully converted your PDF into a file that can be read and processed by Kindle, all you have to do is transfer your PDF to the Kindle. You have the following options:

  1. As already mentioned, when you buy a Kindle you will receive your own Kindle email address. This is usually: [email protected]. The first method is to simply send the PDF by email to your Kindle address. Make sure that this address is registered. You can combine this step with the “convert” function above.
  2. The second method is transferring via USB. If you are charging your Kindle and have connected it to your computer via USB, you can copy the converted PDF directly over.
  3. The third method is to transfer using the “Send to Kindle” tool. This feature was developed by Amazon to make the previously tedious data transfer to the Kindle easier. You can download “Send to Kindle” here.
  4. Tipp: Send the file to the address with the addition “free”, i.e. “[email protected]”. This will send the documents directly to your Kindle if WiFi is available.
  5. By the way: If you already have PDFs on your Kindle and don't want to format them, read the documents in landscape format, which is much more comfortable.
