“Rust 2,” the sequel to the popular multiplayer game “Rust,” was indirectly announced by the game developer in September 2023. Nothing has happened since then.
Rust 2 announced in September 2023: Since then there has been a standstill
Rust became a real hit on the online gaming platform Steam. It's no surprise that many fans want a sequel to the dystopian multiplayer. And fans were indeed able to look forward to an announcement in late summer 2023.
- In September 2023, an angry blog post caused a furore. In it, Rust developer and owner of Facepunch Garry Newman complained about a planned change to Unity. But let's start from the beginning.
- Unity is a platform used by game developers to create games. In late summer 2023, Unity announced that it would change its pricing policy. Starting in 2024, fees would be charged for each game installation. In the meantime, Unity has backtracked and announced that the changes will first apply to new projects.
- Either way, the Rust developers were very upset. In the blog post in question, Newman criticized: “We were not warned. We spent 10 years developing Rust on the Unity engine. We paid them every year. And now they've changed the rules.”
- At the same time, the developer more or less clearly announced a successor to the popular game: “Let's not make the same mistake again, Rust 2 will definitely not be a Unity game.” Newman did not provide any further details or even a release date.
Changes in Rust 2: Possible scenarios
Since Newman announced that Rust 2 would “not be a Unity game,” nothing else has happened. There have been no further announcements, not even hints.
- Therefore, no official story is known for the sequel yet. Sequels often consist more of graphical updates. What this will look like for Rust 2, however, is completely unclear.
- At this point, we can only speculate about the possible directions of Rust 2. It is conceivable that the second part will have a new setting or a new timeline. While the events of Rust take place on May 5, 2024, users with Rust 2 may be able to travel further into the future.
- Another option is to change the setting – perhaps to a post-apocalyptic world on another planet.
- Maybe Rust 2 will also have a detailed storyline including background information that was mostly missing in the first part.
- It is also possible that the developers will develop the game concept further and take it to a new level. But: This is all just speculation. What Rust 2 will look like and when or if the sequel will come at all is still unclear. (As of September 2024)
