Team Fortress 3: Information about release and content

Team Fortress 3 is eagerly awaited by fans of the cult shooter. However, Valve, the development studio behind the game, is keeping information under wraps.

Team Fortress 3 – what is known so far

Unfortunately, Team Fortress 3 is still just the community's wishful thinking, as Valve has not made any announcements about a successor to its aging predecessor (as of August 2024). When it is released, it will be playable on Steam like all other Valve games.

  • Even though Team Fortress 2 (TF2) receives updates every now and then, many fans want a modern successor to the first-person shooter – especially since TF2 is struggling with a bot problem, which severely limits the fun of the game. New content for the game, such as maps or cosmetic content, is mainly developed by the community, while bugs continue to be fixed by Valve.
  • Another possibility would be an upgrade to the Source Engine 2, as CS:GO has already received. That wouldn't be Team Fortress 3, but the game would benefit from a graphical update as well as other advantages of the new engine, such as improved performance. However, there are no official statements on this either.
  • TF2 fans aren't the only ones waiting for a sequel to their beloved Valve game. Fans of other IPs from the developer, such as Half-Life, Portal and Left 4 Dead, have also been waiting for new installments for years. At least some games have shown signs of life, such as the Portal RTX update or the VR game Half-Life: Alyx, which tells a new story from the universe.
  • Valve is still busy developing Deadlock. The game is a mixture of MOBA and hero shooter and although videos and images of the game have already been leaked, it has not yet been officially announced by Valve. It is therefore unclear when the game will be released. TF2 fans will have to make do with Deadlock for now until there is news about Team Fortress 3.

Alternatives to Team Fortress 3

Until Team Fortress 3 is released, you can shorten the waiting time with other hero shooters.

  • The free Overwatch 2 offers a variety of characters, which are divided into the classes Tank, Damage and Support. Matches are played in 5v5 format and have different sequences. In push mode, for example, you have to accompany a robot that is making its way to the other side of the map, while the opposing team tries to stop you and also wants to take control of the robot.
  • The sci-fi FPS Concord, like TF2, has a roster of characters that differ from each other not only in appearance, but also in skills and weapons. The biggest innovation, in addition to new cutscenes every week that continue the story, is the mechanic that a new character must be selected after winning a round in order to improve the game balance.
  • Marvel Rivals is a third-person hero shooter from the comic book studio and brings together a wide variety of heroes from the Marvel universe under one roof. As befits the genre, characters have roles such as support or tank and, in addition to regular skills, also have an ultimate ability that can significantly influence the gameplay. After the test phase, the game will be free to play (as of August 2024).
