Test the battery status of a notebook

Test the battery status of a notebook

You can test the battery status of your notebook with a simple command or freeware tools and find out more about its lifespan.

Windows 8: Test a notebook’s battery using a command

If you are using a Windows 8 laptop or a Surface tablet, you can use a native command to test the battery health:

  1. Open the command line with the key combination (Windows)+(R), followed by the command “cmd”.
  2. In the command line, type “powercfg /batteryreport” and press Enter. This command creates a report that is saved as an HTML file in your user folder.
  3. Here you will find information about the device, the batteries installed, the runtime behavior over the last three days and the estimated lifespan.

From Windows 10: Use BatteryHistoryView for the battery test

If you have Windows 11 or 10 installed on your notebook, you can download BatteryHistoryView to find out more about the condition of your battery.

  • Unfortunately, the program is only available in English, but you will receive detailed information about the battery installed in your laptop.
  • You can see the charging cycle and the maximum capacity of the battery. After an analysis, you will be shown a clear overview of how often your battery has been charged and what the maximum capacity is now.
