Thunderbird: Junk folder disappeared - what to do?

If the Junk folder in Thunderbird has disappeared, you probably accidentally deleted it. However, the spam folder can be restored.

Thunderbird – restore disappeared junk folder

Mozilla Thunderbird can be personalized in many ways. Among other things, you decide for yourself whether the junk folder should be visible or not. If you accidentally deleted the spam folder, you can quickly restore it with just a few mouse clicks.

  • If you have created multiple accounts in Thunderbird, first go to the account in which you want to restore the junk folder. Then call up the main menu by clicking on the three bars in the upper right area.
  • In the main menu, choose the “Edit account settings” option. After selecting the relevant account on the left side of the Account Settings menu, go to the Junk Filter option.
  • On the right side you can then activate or deactivate the option “Activate junk filter for this account” under “Classification”. If you scroll further down, you will find various options to further refine the spam selection. Among other things, you have the option, for example, to automatically move emails from certain senders to the junk folder or to exclude them altogether.
  • Under “Storage space” you select where the spam will be stored in the future. You can also decide whether and when the spam messages are automatically deleted. After you have made your settings, you will find the “lost” junk folder again under the account in question.

A Thunderbird spam folder for all accounts

As already described above, the popular email program Thunderbird offers various options for dealing with unwanted messages. If you have set up several accounts, it is worth thinking about one point:

  • In Thunderbird you have the option to set up a separate junk folder for each individual email account. This has the advantage that you can individually adjust how spam messages are handled.
  • Alternatively, you have the option to collect all spam in a single junk folder. The advantage here is that you can check all junk messages at a glance if you want to do that just to be on the safe side. Alternatively, you can of course also have the spam automatically deleted in Thunderbird after a predetermined period of time.
  • Tip: If you would like to bring order to the vast amounts of messages that have accumulated in Thunderbird over time, you can tag the emails with keywords.
