Two phone numbers with one cell phone: How it works

You can use two phone numbers on one mobile phone at the same time. For example, you can use a private and a business number on the same device.

Two phone numbers with dual SIM phones

If you want to use two phone numbers on one cell phone, you can use so-called dual-SIM cell phones. These are smartphones that have two SIM card slots.

  • This means you can use two phone numbers on one cell phone. There is a SIM card available for each phone number.
  • Depending on the system, you select in advance which SIM card will be used by default for SMS, mobile Internet and calls, or you select the respective card before each action.
  • The dual SIM cell phone function allows you to use a private and a business number, for example. This means you can switch off the business card after work and can only be reached privately.
  • A dual-SIM cell phone is also worthwhile from a financial point of view. With so-called tariff sharing, for example, you can use a SIM card with a data flat rate in the strong D network for fast surfing on the Internet. You can equip the second SIM with a cheaper tariff for making calls.
  • By the way: Newer smartphones sometimes have an eSIM. There is also an additional normal slot. This means that the data from the mobile phone contract is transferred directly from the respective provider to the eSIM, i.e. the digital profile. You also have the option of inserting a second SIM card with a different contract.

Automatic call forwarding

Another possibility to use two phone numbers, albeit via a small detour or rather indirectly, is automatic call forwarding.

  • You can activate call forwarding on any mobile phone. You can activate this in the menu of your device and enter a phone number to which the calls should be forwarded.
  • Danger: Many providers offer call forwarding from mobile phones free of charge. However, there are also tariffs where you have to pay per forwarding – 10 cents per forwarded minute of conversation. Ask your provider in advance about any costs.
  • Automatic call forwarding is a good alternative, but in the long run a dual-SIM phone pays off and proves to be much more practical.
