Waterproofing a tent: tips & tricks

It is best to waterproof your tent before every camping holiday. This way you don't have to worry about getting wet in the tent during your outdoor tour.

Impregnate tent according to these instructions

A tent is exposed to many environmental influences. Sometimes the sun shines, then it rains. During the day it is warm, at night it is cold. All of this leads to the original waterproofing wearing off. So renew it regularly to be protected.

  • Preparation: Buy a suitable waterproofing agent based on the material of the tent tarpaulin. It is best to seek advice from a specialist shop. Read the instructions carefully. Then put up the tent, check it for damage and clean it.
  • Implementation: If it is a waterproofing spray, spray it directly onto the tent canvas at the required distance. The entire surface should be sprayed with the product at the end. After spraying, you can also go over it with a cloth and spread everything out well.
  • If you have a liquid waterproofing agent, you either have a pump bottle in your hand or you have received a normal bottle. If you have a pump bottle, you pour the agent directly from the bottle onto a microfiber cloth. If you have a bottle, you pour the contents into a bowl and use the cloth to remove the contents. Use the microfiber cloth to spread the contents evenly over the tent tarpaulin.
  • Influence: As a rule, the impregnating agent needs to take effect for 20 minutes. However, you should take a look at the instructions to see whether a different time is specified for the agent you are using. If you see any excess agent after the exposure time, remove it with the microfiber cloth. Otherwise, stains will appear later.
  • Dry: We cannot provide any information on this. Please refer to the manufacturer's instructions.
  • Test: If your tent is completely dry, you should check the waterproofing. Use the garden hose or a watering can and wet the tent canvas with water. If water still comes through, you have to repeat the waterproofing process.

Then it's time to waterproof a tent

As a rule of thumb, if you go on holiday once a year, you should always waterproof your tent before your holiday.

  • If you travel often, check before you leave whether the tent is still waterproof. If the water from the garden hose or watering can runs off in large beads, the tent is still waterproof.
  • However, if you see that a film of water is forming, it is time to refresh the impregnation.
