If you have been using a pillow for a long time, yellow spots often appear. However, you can combat these with home remedies.
Why yellow stains appear on the pillow
You spend around six to eight hours in bed every night. It is normal for your pillow to be badly affected and have yellow spots.
- Sweat is the main reason why pillows develop yellow, round spots over time. But the oil film on the skin, saliva, skin care products, dust and dirt also contribute.
- The yellow spots are not dangerous at first. But mold can also be behind it. If you see dark spots on the discoloration, this indicates mold – and this is dangerous to your health. In this case, you should buy a new pillow.
This is how you get rid of the discoloration on your pillow
If you notice that yellow stains have formed when you put your pillow on, you don't have to replace it straight away. The discoloration can usually be easily removed.
- First, look at the care label on the pillow and wash it in the washing machine according to the instructions.
- If a single wash is not enough to remove the yellow stains, you can spread some baking soda on the pillow and let it absorb for an hour. This has an absorbing effect. Then vacuum off the baking powder.
- You can also soak your pillow in vinegar before washing it. If possible, place it in the sun to dry to bleach out the discoloration.
