iPhone/iPad: Activate iMessage – here's how

Enable iMessage on your iPhone or iPad so that users who also use iMessage receive your message via the Internet instead of cellular communications.

Activate iMessage on iPhone and iPad

If you don't have an SMS flat rate, you can save a lot of money by using iMessage. The amount of data required is significantly cheaper compared to the cost of an SMS.

  1. Open the Settings app on your Apple mobile device.
  2. Scroll down and select the “Messages” menu item.
  3. At the top, enable the “iMessage” option. After a few seconds you will be notified that activation costs may apply. However, if they arise, these amount to a maximum of the cost of one SMS.
  4. iMessage is now activated. Messages sent via iMessage appear blue instead of green in the Messages app.
